Split is the second-largest city in Croatia, located on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. It is an intraregional transport hub and popular tourist destination - almost one million tourists visit each year. The city was founded as the Greek colony of Aspálathos in the 3rd or 2nd century BCE, In 305 CE, it became the site of the Palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian. The remains of his palace are a key attraction in the city. It was Diocletian who in essence created the Holy Roman Empire in Constantinople that lasted until taken by the Ottoman Emperor Mehmet II in 1453.

The harbor at Split is used by both commercial and pleasure ships
