Belgrade

The capital of Serbia and former capital of Yugoslavia. I was pleasantly surprised because my past dealings with the Serbs have not been positive. The city is a mix of a modern capital and the set of a stereotypical spy movie set in Communist eastern Europe.

Bomb Damage, Serbian Ministry of Defense

On May 7, 1999, NATO (read: US) forces bombed the two Serbian Ministry of Defense buildings on Kneza Miloša in downtown Belgrade - the two are on opposite sides of a street and are to represent two sides of a river valley. The Serb I was with did admit that the strikes were very precise - no damage to neighboring areas. They have left the buildings as a tourist attraction - it is called "NATO Agression." I suggested they rename it, "American Airpower."
